Rain delays and shortened rounds

What to do during a weather delay, how to restart, and how to score a round that is cut to fewer holes.

A delay is mostly a communication job. Redswing keeps your scores and pages as they are, so the work is telling people what is happening.

Overview

Redswing has no pause switch for scoring. Scoring links stay open, saved holes stay saved, and the leaderboard keeps showing what has been entered. You control what players do by telling them.

During the delay

  1. Stop play following your course's rules. For lightning, see Lightning and severe weather.
  2. Ask groups to stop entering scores. Saved holes are safe.
  3. Open Dashboard → Events → [Event] → Communications, choose All registered players, and send a short message: what happened, where to wait, and when you will update them. Only players who opted in get the text, so also announce in person.
  4. Keep the silent auction going in the clubhouse if you like. Guests bid on paper bid sheets. The auction closes when you click Close & set winners. It does not close on a timer you must move.
  5. Tell the kitchen and awards speakers about the new schedule.

When play restarts

  1. Send the restart message from Communications. A good restart message names the time and where groups go.
  2. For a shotgun start, groups restart on the hole they stopped on. Redswing shows each group's starting hole on the Pairings page, but not where they stopped. Your marshals handle that.
  3. Remind groups that the scoring card keeps saved scores. It follows the group's order of play from its starting hole. They open Hole list and tap the next hole marked Open. See Fixing a wrong score.

If you shorten the round (for example to 9 holes)

  1. Decide with the course and your committee, and announce the rule: which holes count.
  2. Redswing's event hole count stays as you set it. The leaderboard ranks by total strokes and shows a Thru column for holes entered. A team that has entered fewer holes can look ahead until others catch up.
  3. For a fair result, rank teams only when all of them show the same Thru. Ask teams not to enter holes beyond your cutoff.
  4. If teams played different numbers of holes, the committee must decide the rule. Redswing does not adjust for it.
  5. The Redswing leaderboard is a convenience. Your committee's decision is the official result.

If you call play for the day

Scores stay as entered. Decide whether the result stands, and whether the auction, dinner, and awards go ahead. See Postponing or cancelling an event for refund and rain-date choices.

Things to know

  • The shotgun time can be changed in Settings under event times. Changing it does not text anyone.
  • A weather plan written down before the day saves time. Boards often ask for it ahead of the event.
