When phones or signal fail: paper scoring and entering scores later

How to score on paper, enter the scores afterward, and what happens to scores when a phone loses signal. Includes a blank scorecard.

Paper always works. This article tells you what Redswing does without signal, how to run on paper, and how to enter scores afterward.

Overview

Scores are saved on the phone first, then sent. When a player taps Next hole, the score is stored on that phone. If there is no signal, the card shows Saved on this phone. and says it will send when there is signal. The group keeps scoring. When the signal comes back, the scores send on their own, or the player taps Send now.

What happens with a weak or lost signal

  • Open the scoring page once before the group goes out of coverage, so the page is loaded on the phone.
  • Unsent holes stay on the phone, even if the page is closed. Reopen the same link on the same phone to send them.
  • If the phone is lost or broken before the scores send, those unsent holes are lost. Saved holes on Redswing are still there.
  • Saving a hole twice replaces the first score. It never adds up, so a second tap is safe.
  • If two phones send a score for the same hole, the newest score wins. A late, older score is set aside and the card says so.
  • If a player taps Next hole without changing the number, the card asks "You did not change this score." The player taps Yes, par or Change score.
  • If a hole cannot be saved for good, the card says "Hole [number] could not be saved. Show this screen to the tournament organizer."
  • Texts can arrive late in weak coverage.

Option 1: catch up in the next spot with signal

Keep scoring on the phone. At the next spot with signal, the saved holes send. To fill in a missed hole, reopen the scoring link. It opens on the first hole still open, in the group's order of play. Use Hole list to jump to any hole.

Option 2: paper scorecards

  1. Open Dashboard → Events → [Event] → Pairings, open the Print menu, and choose Scorecards. This needs pairings to be generated first. Print a spare set. A blank scorecard is below.
  2. Hand a card to every group, or to any group whose captain has no smartphone.
  3. Each group writes one score per hole in a scramble, or one score per player per hole in other formats.
  4. Collect the cards at the end and enter them (steps below).

Enter paper scores later

  1. Open Dashboard → Events → [Event] → Scoring.
  2. Find the group, open its player links, and copy the link. Any player's link opens that group's card.
  3. Open the link on a phone or laptop with signal.
  4. For each hole, tap the plus or minus to match the paper card, then tap Next hole. On the last hole the button reads Send final scores.
  5. For a scramble, enter one number for the team. For other formats, enter each player's number.
  6. Check the Scoring page. Each group shows how many holes are saved. If every hole is already saved, the link shows "Round complete" and cannot be reopened. Open Ask AI; a person at Redswing fixes it. See Fixing a wrong score.

Players without a smartphone

  • Only one phone per group needs to work. Any team member with a smartphone can score. There is no app to install. The link opens in the phone's web browser.
  • A flip phone cannot run the scoring page. Pair that team with a smartphone user, or use a paper card. A volunteer can ride with the group and score.
  • A player who does not want to give their phone number to a website does not have to. The team can still score on another player's phone, or on paper.
  • A dead battery: any teammate's link works. Players can also use a borrowed phone and the link from you.

The leaderboard with paper scores

The leaderboard only knows what has been entered. If most groups score on paper, enter the cards as they come in, and build a quick hand tally for the clubhouse. Use the runbook your committee prints before the event.
