Short teams and extra players

How scoring works when a team has fewer or more players than planned.

Redswing scores whatever is in the group. Whether a short or extra team is allowed, and how it is adjusted, is your committee's rule.

Overview

Scoring does not enforce a team size. The scoring card shows the players in the group. Handicaps and totals follow the players present.

Team with fewer players

  • Scramble: one team score per hole. A team of three scores the same way. With handicaps on, the team handicap is the average of the players in the group. Check the number your committee expects.
  • Best ball: the best score per hole counts. Fewer players is a small disadvantage but needs no adjustment.
  • Stroke play or stableford: the total adds every player's score, so a team of three has fewer scores and a lower total. The committee should decide how to adjust, for example by scoring per player.

Team with a fifth player

Redswing's pairings make groups of the size you set. You cannot add a fifth player to a group in the dashboard. Whether five can play and score is your rule. In a scramble the team still enters one score per hole.

Steps

  1. Tell the committee how many players are on the team.
  2. Decide the scoring rule and tell the team before they start.
  3. If the player list should change, see Swapping or substituting a player.

Things to know

  • Do not regenerate pairings on event day to fix a short team. It erases hand edits. See Undoing a pairings change.
  • Announce the rule, so other teams know.
