Is my sponsorship tax-deductible?

What Redswing shows you about tax, what decides deductibility, and who to ask.

Redswing can't tell you whether your sponsorship is deductible. It depends on what you receive in return and on your own situation. Ask your tax advisor.

Draft for legal review: This article describes how Redswing works in plain language. It is not tax or legal advice and an attorney has not reviewed it yet. Ask your own tax advisor or attorney about your situation.

What decides it (in plain words)

  • What you get back. Playing spots, meals and gifts have a value. That value usually isn't a gift.
  • How your business treats it. Many businesses treat a sponsorship as a business expense rather than a gift. Your tax advisor decides how it applies to you.

What Redswing shows you

  • At checkout: if the organizer has set a value for what your package includes, a tax notice is shown before you pay. It's generated from the organizer's own values; Redswing doesn't choose the numbers.
  • The booking fee on golfer spots: The $5 Redswing booking fee is paid to Redswing for event software. It is not a contribution to the organization and is not tax-deductible.
  • Letters after the event: organizers can download acknowledgment letters. A sponsorship only gets one when its package has a value set for what the sponsor receives. Ask the organizer if you need one.

What to do

  1. Keep your payment confirmation and any receipt or letter from the organizer.
  2. Ask the organizer for a list of what your package included, if your advisor needs it.
  3. Ask your tax advisor how to treat it.

Still need help? Your tournament organizer can fix this. Reply to your confirmation email (replies go to the organizer), or ask at the check-in desk on the day.
