Words we use

People and entries

  • Golfer: anyone playing in your event.
  • Sign-up: one entry on your Golfers page: a whole team or a single golfer, with the contact person who signed up.
  • Team: the golfers who play and score together, under one name. Sample teams in screenshots are called "Foursome 1", "Foursome 2" and so on.
  • Group: who goes out on the course together, with a starting hole or tee time ("Group 2"). You make groups on Pairings. In a scramble, a group is usually one team.
  • Flight: "a group of golfers of similar skill (for example low and high handicaps) that gets its own winner". Use one flight if everyone competes together. See What flights are.
  • Walk-up: a golfer who arrives on the day without having signed up.
  • Waitlist: golfers waiting for a spot once your event is full.
  • Comp: a golfer who plays for free, for example a sponsor's guest. Mark them paid with Comp, or give them a 100%-off comp code.
  • Admin, Editor, Viewer: the three roles for people on your committee. See What Admin, Editor and Viewer can do.

Formats (how teams play)

  • Scramble: everyone on the team hits, the team picks the best shot, and everyone plays from there. One team score per hole. The most common charity format.
  • Best ball: everyone plays their own ball; the team's score on each hole is its best single score.
  • Stroke play: everyone plays their own ball and counts every stroke. The lowest total wins.
  • Stableford: a points game. For now Redswing scores it as total strokes.
  • Handicap: a number for a golfer's skill. With handicaps on, the leaderboard can show net scores (after handicap) beside gross (the actual strokes).
  • Mulligan: a do-over shot, often sold as an add-on or at a station.

Starts (how groups begin)

  • Shotgun: every group starts on a different hole at the same time, so everyone finishes around the same time.
  • Wave: groups start in rounds, a set number of minutes apart.
  • Tee times: groups start from the first hole one after another, at set times.

Money

  • Pay you directly: a golfer reserves a spot and pays your organization by cash, check or your own payment link. You click Mark paid when it arrives.
  • Mark paid: the button on Golfers that records a payment you received (Cash, Check or Comp).
  • Card payments: golfers pay online by card through your organization's own Square account, set up on Get paid.
  • Booking fee: Redswing's fee on a golfer who pays online by card. See What does Redswing cost?
  • Payout: money Square sends from your organization's Square account to your bank.
  • Sponsor package: what a sponsor buys (for example a hole sign, or a package with golfer spots included).
  • Add-on: an extra golfers can buy when they sign up, such as a mulligan pack.

On the day

  • Scoring link: the web page a group scores on, opened from a link or a QR code. Each group has its own.
  • Check-in: marking golfers as arrived, on Check-in or by golfers themselves at a self check-in page.
  • Leaderboard: live standings, on phones or on a TV in TV mode.

Event status

  • Draft: only your team can see it. Published: the page is live and taking sign-ups. Live: the event is under way. Finished: the event is over.
