Thank a donor who gave $250 or more

Know what the $250 reminder means after you record a gift, and where to go to prepare the written acknowledgment.

After you save a hand-recorded gift of $250 or more, the Donors page shows a box titled One more step for this gift. The message in it, from the app, is:

Gifts of $250 or more need a written acknowledgment from the charity. Send one from Tax receipts.

Draft for legal review: This article describes how Redswing works in plain language. It is not tax or legal advice and an attorney has not reviewed it yet. Ask your tax advisor or attorney about your own situation.

What this means

Redswing reminds you; it does not send the acknowledgment for you when you record a gift by hand. The reminder shows once, right after you save. It also shows for gifts of exactly $250.

Steps

  1. Record the gift. See Record a cash or check donation.
  2. Click Open Tax receipts inside the box, or open Tax receipts in the event sidebar (in the Money group).
  3. Enter your organization's EIN (Tax ID) and mailing address if you have not, and follow the steps in Sending tax receipts.
  4. Send or hand the letter to the donor.

Tips

  • Add the donor's email when you record the gift so you can reach them.
  • If you closed the box, the gift is still in your list marked Entered by hand. Check which gifts are $250 or more on the Donations tab.
  • What the letter must say, and what is deductible, is a question for your tax advisor. Redswing does not give tax advice.
